24 Hours of Innovation Contest

February 2014

The event, held in Adams Hall at the University of Oklahoma (OU) on February 28, 2014 was the first of its kind held at the university. All of the students of OU were invited to participate in the event, challenging them to conceptualize, design and present creative business oriented mobile apps that solve real business problems in the Oil & Gas industry. Being that the University of Oklahoma and Tech Allies both have strong ties in the oil and gas industry, the focus of the event was obvious. Oil & Gas companies were brought in, including Devon Energy, ConocoPhillips, Phillips66 to name a few, to speak, mentor, and judge the event.

Event Overview

Students were tasked with solving a specific need, through focused effort in devising a mobile application that will solve this need.

Deliverables

The following deliverables were to be provided by each team at the final presentation:

  1. Slides outlining the application
  2. List of the application capabilities
  3. Visual representation of the application

Goals

The following questions were to be addressed in the final presentation by each team in regards to their application:

  • What is your target market? Up-stream, Mid-stream, Down-stream
  • Marketing and Distribution strategy for the application
  • Business case describing why it is needed
  • How the application is used
  • Where does the data originate/Where is it stored
  • Benefits of the application
  • Differentiator in the marketplace
  • Opportunities for future growth of the application
  • Branding abilities
  • Challenges in development and bringing to market

Evaluation

Each team’s application was evaluated on alignment with Goals, originality, creativity, overall presentation and overall entrepreneurial and technological innovation.
